Brief history
The Finnish UNIMA national center was founded on February 11th 1984. With 183 members, the National Center demonstrates the dynamism of the puppetry arts in Finland.
Sirppa Sivori-Asp, puppeteer, director of puppet theatre and the founder of Nukketeatteri Vihreä Omena (Green Apple theatre), Finland’s first professional theatre for puppetry, was President of UNIMA between 1992 and 2000.
Important projects and achievements
- Publication of the magazine “Nukketeatteri” (2 issues a year);
- a book compiled and edited by Leila Peltonen and Marjut Tawast, “Nukketeatteria suomalaisilla näyttämöillä” (325 pp. A review of Finnish puppet theatre);
- the Finnish puppetry day on February 11th. Every year, some respected puppetry personality or group writes a Puppetry Day Declaration. The declaration is read aloud in theatres for the audience.
