Brief history
The Portuguese UNIMA Centre was founded on May 15th 1989 in Evora at the instigation of the theatre company ‘Bonecos de Stº Aleixo’. From this company, the puppeteer Jose Russo was elected as the first President of UNIMA Portugal. Despite several activities, UNIMA Portugal experienced difficulties, became dormant, and needed to wait until June 27, 2009 in Alcobaça before the national Centre was revived, thanks to the dynamism of a new generation of puppeteers.
Important projects and achievements
UNIMA-Portugal has organized debates, lectures, exhibitions, technical and artistic training and official shows in the Worldwide Festival of Puppet Theatres in Charleville-Mézières in 1991 and 1994. Between 2009 and 2012, the Centre has created a roadmap for its activities. A documentation centre was opened in 2001. ‘UNIMA Portugal Magazine’ has been published since 2012.
