Presentation

Brief history
UNIMA SA, the South African association of Puppetry and Visual performance, established in 1972 is working to develop South African puppetry art through encouraging the exposure of South African puppeteers to trends in the art form and the development of local skills. UNIMA SA formalized its statutes and registered as an NPO in 2005. In 1980 Lily Herzberg, a founder of UNIMA South Africa was named a UNIMA Member of Honour.

Important projects and achievements
UNIMA SA’s activities include a variety of events which aim at promoting and developing the art of puppetry. Meetings and workshops are open to the public. Talks and discussions amongst professionals are organized and a professional training is offered. UNIMA SA researches and networks the African visual theatre companies. It prints a newsletter on the developments of the puppet and visual theatre in South Africa. Its most important activity is the Out The Box festival and Active Puppets.
