WORKSHOP

Interaction and dialogue between shadow theatre and projected video image, exploratory and research module by Alessandra Amicarelli (90 minutes per session).

In the artistic research I have been conducting for over two decades, shadow theatre and puppetry interact with video images projected on screens and moving surfaces to create a theatre of drawing on stage.

What has always intrigued me is to explore the relationship between the movement of the projected drawing and the movement of bodies on stage. I prefer the creation of video images using the technique of stop motion animated drawn silhouettes, a technique with a poetics similar to Muybridge’s pre-cinema, and first used as a form of cinematic animation in Lotte Reiniger’s feature films. My interest lies in achieving a convergence between low, archaic and universal technologies (drawing) and high, sophisticated and specialised technologies (editing software, mapping, interaction) in a sensitive, poetic, subtle and unobtrusive way. The three-hour training module provides an insight into the creative and technical process I explore, from drawing to video mapping. A practical segment will be devoted to creating a short visual shadow poem using participants’ drawings, a sketchbook and an LED torch: it will be about creating a shadow notebook! Alessandra Amicarelli

Duration of the online module: 3 hours in two sessions of 1 hour and 30 minutes each, over two consecutive days.

The module will be conducted in Italian (with translation into Spanish and Portuguese).
