As you might already know, the second wave of COVID 19 in India has proved devastating. The health crisis has been so colossal that very few resources are left to support artists who are now out of work for over a year. Most of the puppeteers in rural areas especially in far flung regions travel from village to village performing. The lockdown has brought all travel to a complete halt. Even after the lockdowns are lifted performances will be the last priority of COVID hit audiences. Artists need food, medical aid and daily expenses.
But artists also need their dignity and not doles. They want to perform.
Further the two cyclones that recently struck both the east and west coasts of India has also taken its toll.
This project is looking to support each artist’s family with a one-time support of Rs 10,000/- for the recording of a 10 minute performance or a 10 minute documentary. UNIMA Puppeteers Trust India will upload these video films on the website thereby creating an artists database, especially focused on the traditional forms.
