The Wayang puppets are Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Originally from the north coast of Java, under the influence of the Chinese puppet theater, these puppets are made of wood in three dimensions in the case of Wayang golek and buffalo skin in the case of wayang kulit. Originally, they date from the 16th century. They are used to interpret the Wayang Cepak stories, but from the 19th century onwards they also tell the stories of Wayang Purwa.
