Brief history
Romania is one of the founder countries of UNIMA. In 1957 the National Centre was founded under the leadership of Margareta Niculescu. In the same year she was elected as a member of UNIMA’s Executive Committee. She organized in Bucharest three International Puppet Festivals (1958, 1960, 1965), together with UNIMA Congresses and Meetings of the UNIMA Executive Committee (EC). In 1990, UNIMA Romania was re-established, with Cristian Pepino as President; Calin Mocanu was elected President in 2001. From 2000-2004 M. Niculescu was the elected President of international UNIMA.
Important projects and achievements
The most important achievements are: a section for the Puppet Arts at the Theatre and Film Academy in Bucharest (University of Theatrical and Film Arts); the establishment of courses for young puppeteers; compiling a Directory that includes the main Romanian puppet artists; the inauguration of The Centre for Theatre and Experimental Animation Art, and organizing the material for the history of Romanian Puppet Theatre included in the Encyclopédie Mondiale des Arts de la Marionnette, and later the World Encyclopedia of Puppetry Arts (EMAM and WEPA).
