Lourdes Pérez Gay is passionate about children’s theater, and as a director and puppeteer, she has produced 40 shows with more than 3,500 performances. Historias en Colores (Stories in Colors), Digüejame una vaca (Draw Me a Cow), El intruso (The Intruder), and El sueño de la bella durmiente (The Dream of Sleeping Beauty) are some of these works that have toured countless states and countries as part of national and international festivals and as part of the INBA (National Institute of Art and Culture) School Theater program. Among many others.
Her theatrical practice was first inserted into political theater with her group Mascarones, and then, in 1976, she founded the puppet company for girls and boys, Marionetas de la esquina, with her partner Lucio Espíndola (RIP). Later, her daughter, Amaranta Leyva, joined the company as a playwright and collaborator.
The intense work of Pérez Gay and her company is also reflected in the consolidation, since 2014, of the La Titería Cultural Center, located in Coyoacán, which they built from the ground up and which still hosts permanent cultural and theatrical activities.*
She was the founder of the Mexican Center of the International Marionette Union, UNIMA Mexico. She received the distinction of Honorary Member and
currently serves on the Honorary Ethics Council of UNIMA Mexico.
