Born in Havana, Cuba, Carmela has been involved in the fascinating world of puppetry from an early age, collaborating and participating in a range of projects. She holds a Master’s in Social Development from the University of Murcia, Spain (2013), and a degree in Theatre Arts from ISA, Universidad de las Artes (1998), specializing in Dramaturgy. An Artistic Director and First-Level Actress, she has earned diplomas in Children’s and Puppet Theatre (ISA, 2001) and in Popular Education (APC, 2015). She is a member of the Cuban Union of Writers and Artists (UNEAC), the International Union of Puppetry (UNIMA), and the International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People (ASSITEJ). Her artistic and pedagogical work has been presented at events in Cuba and internationally. Since 1999, she has been the founder, director, and actress of Teatro Viajero and is currently the artistic director and advisor for the new project Teatro Itinerante de La Habana (2021), alongside Maestro Julio Cordero. She also took part in the television program “Despertar con Pelusín” (2008), a show dedicated to the national puppet character Pelusín del Monte, created by Dora Alonso, with scripts by prominent researcher Fredy Artiles and direction by Maestro Julio Cordero. Her work with puppets extends beyond the children’s realm to adult audiences, for whom she has created several works.
