Puppets are wonderful creative and expressive outlets. They also offer potential therapeutic interventions for many children—but not all and not all in the same way. Verona-based glove puppeteer and educator Maurizio Gioco and Boston University assistant professor and artist Felice Amato discuss some of the many considerations to bear in mind when designing puppetry-based approaches for an individual (or group). The two have been engaging in a 5-year collaboration around the art and application of puppetry. In this talk, Gioco shares insights into the therapeutic dramaturgy of the puppet (how it uses space, how it engages, and how it expresses and interacts), emphasizing the need to be attentive to each child. Amato describes a course she designed to center puppetry as a tool for developing teachers’ capacity to create more accessible activities. She draws on the work of various practitioners, both artists and educators, to demonstrate the importance of individualizing instruction and multi-modal modifications can benefit multiple students in a class. Gioco regularly visits Amato’s courses, virtually and even in-person. The two recently presented “To Care and to Cure with Puppets: Faces, Movements, and Words to Soothe Our Existence,” at the Melete Center’s conference on the Philosophy and Politics of Care at the University of Verona in 2024.
