The Women commission, created in 2008, was not renewed at the 2016 Congress.

The purposes of the UNIMA Women commission are to support women artists working with puppetry in countries and cultures where women are suppressed, to encourage the use of puppetry as a tool to develop women and their self- confidence and professional careers, to use the name of the commission to raise funds and support outside of UNIMA for outstanding women’s work, to support and encourage women’s work with puppets, to support professional directors who are women to develop the confidence to perform and tour,, to support women in leadership positions in the organisation, to research women’s work with puppetry.

Achievements

The commission has created two awards which promote and encourage the women puppeteers’ work.

Noriko Nishimoto, the winner of the first Women’s Commission Award in 2012, has donated her prize money (800 Euros) to The East Japan Great Earthquake relief activity.
